Steel Grit for Coating Removal: Selection Guide
Select steel grit around the substrate, coating system, required surface condition and blasting equipment—not grit size alone.
Start with the substrate and coating
Record the substrate material, thickness, geometry and sensitive areas. Describe the existing coating, corrosion, scale and contamination. Define the required post-blast cleanliness and surface-profile basis through the responsible project specification.
Match the abrasive to the equipment
State whether the process uses wheel blasting or air blasting, plus machine model, nozzle or wheel details, separation system and current operating mix. Abrasive choice must suit both the workpiece and equipment.
Evaluate size, hardness and shape together
Angular particles support cutting action, while size and hardness influence impact and profile. A larger or harder grade is not automatically better. Ask the supplier to explain the recommended starting grade and trial method.
Run a controlled production trial
Use representative parts and fixed settings. Record surface condition, profile measurement method where applicable, cleaning time, coverage, dust, carryout, separator behavior and abrasive additions.
RFQ checklist
- Substrate, dimensions, geometry and sensitive areas
- Coating, rust or scale condition
- Required cleanliness and profile basis
- Wheel or air-blast equipment and current abrasive
- Hourly throughput and operating schedule
- Trial quantity, packaging, destination and documentation
Frequently asked questions
Which steel grit size should a buyer choose?
Selection depends on coating, substrate, required profile, equipment and cleaning target. Compare candidate grades in a controlled trial.
What should a steel grit RFQ include?
Include substrate, coating condition, part geometry, equipment type, current abrasive, required cleanliness and profile basis, throughput, destination and packaging scope.
