Steel Shot for Foundry Desanding: Selection and Trial Guide
Foundry cleaning performance depends on the complete operating mix, machine settings and casting condition—not abrasive size alone. Use a controlled trial to compare cleaning rate, surface condition and consumption.
1. Define the casting and contamination
Record casting alloy, part geometry, section thickness, sand system, residual sand or scale, batch weight and fragile features. Separate normal production from unusually heavy contamination.
2. Identify the machine
State wheel-blast or air-blast equipment, wheel diameter and speed where known, number of wheels, loading pattern, cycle time, separator condition and dust-collection status. Equipment condition can mask abrasive performance.
3. Select an initial size range
Larger particles generally deliver stronger impact while smaller particles improve coverage. The useful choice is commonly a maintained blend rather than a single new-particle size. Confirm the proposed grade and hardness against the casting and finish requirement.
4. Control the operating mix
Check separator settings, screen losses, carryout and replenishment. An unstable operating mix changes coverage and impact from shift to shift, making supplier comparisons unreliable.
5. Run a documented trial
Use representative castings and keep machine load, cycle and settings consistent. Record time to acceptance, remaining sand or scale, surface appearance, damage, dust, carryout and abrasive additions over enough cycles to reach a meaningful comparison.
