Indonesia Blasting Media Procurement Guide
How to Source Steel Shot and Steel Grit for Indonesia
Indonesian foundries, steel fabricators and industrial blasting operations should select metallic abrasives from the required surface result, equipment and operating cost—not from price per tonne alone.
Steel shot versus steel grit
| Selection factor | Steel shot | Steel grit |
|---|---|---|
| Typical particle shape | Rounded | Angular |
| Surface action | Impact and peening action | Cutting and etching action |
| Applications to evaluate | Foundry cleaning, descaling and strengthening | Rust removal, steel plate pretreatment, foundry cleaning and profile generation |
| Key variables | Grade, hardness, coverage and operating mix | Grade, hardness, retained angularity and required profile |
| Decision method | Match the medium to the workpiece and machine, then approve it through a controlled production trial. | |
The media names describe different actions, but they do not determine the complete result. Particle size, hardness, wheel speed or air pressure, exposure time, separator condition and the existing operating mix all affect the cleaned surface.
Applications Indonesian buyers should describe clearly
Foundry casting cleaning
State the casting metal, dimensions, typical weight, molding residue and difficult-to-clean areas. Include the current cycle and media specification. A supplier needs this context to discuss impact, coverage and whether shot, grit or a controlled mix should be tested.
Steel plate and structural fabrication
Define what must be removed and the surface condition required before coating or fabrication. If a coating supplier or project specification sets a profile requirement, include it in the RFQ. Do not substitute a visual description for a measurable acceptance requirement.
Maintenance and heavy equipment components
Describe the base material, contamination, component geometry and protected areas. Threads, sealing faces and critical dimensions may require masking or a less aggressive process. The abrasive supplier should not be asked to infer these limits.
Grades and product information to confirm
Qishun lists cast steel shot in common grades S70–S780 and SS-0.2–SS-2.5. Listed routine hardness is 40–50 HRC, with special hardness of 52–60 HRC. Its cast steel grit information lists GP, GL and GH, sizes G10–G120 or 0.2–2.5 mm, hardness from 42–66 HRC, and an available 25 kg bag.
These published ranges help buyers prepare an inquiry; they are not a promise that every combination is immediately available or correct for every process. Ask for the exact grade, hardness, particle-size distribution, packing and applicable inspection documents to be stated in the quotation.
Use the steel shot size guide to organize grade-selection questions and the steel shot versus steel grit guide for a broader process comparison.
Check equipment compatibility before a trial
Tell the supplier whether the operation uses wheel blast or air blast. Provide the machine model when available, the current abrasive and any limits specified by the equipment manufacturer. A proposed medium must be compatible with the delivery, recovery, separation and dust-collection systems.
For wheel-blast systems, the blast wheel and separator condition can change cleaning performance and media consumption. For air-blast systems, nozzle condition and operating pressure matter. Record these variables so the new abrasive is assessed fairly.
Run a purchasing trial that produces usable evidence
- Select representative workpieces and define acceptance before testing.
- Record the current medium, machine settings, cycle time and addition rate.
- Agree on the sample grade and quantity.
- Control unrelated changes during the comparison.
- Inspect cleanliness, surface profile or appearance and downstream acceptance.
- Track additions and output over a meaningful production period.
- Approve the specification in writing before the bulk purchase.
If the buyer is considering both steel shot and grit, test them against the same written objective. A medium that cleans faster may create a different profile; a medium with a lower purchase price may require more replenishment. The decision should reflect the whole production result.
Indonesia RFQ and landed-cost checklist
- Company and plant location
- Industry, workpiece material, dimensions and approximate weight
- Contaminant to remove and required cleanliness, profile or finish
- Wheel-blast or air-blast equipment and current abrasive
- Requested shot or grit grade and hardness, if already specified
- Sample quantity and expected monthly or annual consumption
- Bag, pallet and warehouse-handling requirements
- Destination port in Indonesia or full delivery location
- Requested trade term, schedule and shipment documents
Compare quotations on the same commercial basis. Confirm which party covers inland transport, export handling, ocean freight, insurance and destination charges. Separately compare process consumption and accepted output; commercial landed cost and operating cost are related but not identical.
Frequently asked questions
Should an Indonesian buyer choose steel shot or steel grit?
Choose from the required surface action. Rounded steel shot is commonly evaluated for impact cleaning, descaling and peening, while angular steel grit is evaluated for cutting action, rust removal and a more angular profile. Confirm the choice on representative parts.
What grades of steel grit does Qishun list?
Qishun lists GP, GL and GH steel grit in sizes G10 to G120 or approximately 0.2 to 2.5 mm, with listed hardness from 42 to 66 HRC. Exact availability should be confirmed in the quotation.
What information is required for an Indonesia quotation?
Provide the application, workpiece, machine type, current abrasive, required finish or profile, grade and hardness if known, trial or order quantity, packing preference and Indonesian destination port.
Can steel shot and steel grit be mixed?
Some processes use a controlled operating mix, but the ratio must be tested against the machine and finish requirement. Record the existing mix before introducing a different medium.
How should imported blasting media be compared?
Compare landed commercial terms together with consumption, cycle time, cleaning result, dust, machine suitability and rejected work. Price per tonne alone does not show total process cost.
